Also known as the “Pauper Press” which was an underground press from 1765-1968. Topics ranged from drug use, vietnam war, pop culture. Penny press for the working class also ignored the stamp tax

Woman were not allowed to work except under special circumstances. Anna Zenger published New Yoork Weekly Journal when husband was awaiting sedition.
Women would inherit print shops. Diana Nuthead was the first woman to apply for a license to print.

Without controls on the press is like a society without a king, unstable

During the Civil war abolitionist newspapers were shutdown.

Could not be published without privilege from the king, prohibited on threat of death from attacking religion, stirring up passions
