Chapter 11 Flashcards
What are life tables?
Life tables are a convenient means
of summarising the probability distribution associated with a life’s future lifetime.
They allow us to calculate useful probabilities.
What is lx?
is the number of lives who are expected to survive (at least) to age x, out of the
specified starting number.
What is dx
is the number expected to die between age x and age x + 1 (out of the starting
number, or equivalently out of the lx lives expected to survive to age x)
What is qx
qx is the probability that someone now aged exactly x will die within one year:
What is the qx equation?
qx=dx/lx
what is px
px is defined to be the probability that a person aged exactly x survives at
least one year
What is the px equation?
px =lx+1/1x or 1-qx
What is k(px)?
k(px) as the probability someone now aged exactly x will survive at least k years
What is k(qx)?
k(qx) as the probability a person aged exactly x now dies within k years’ time
What is curtate future lifetime of a life?
Is the number of full years that
the life will live from now until they die
Why do we sometimes denote K as Kx
We denote the curtate lifetime of a life by K, or by Kx if we wish to emphasise that the person concerned is now aged x.
What is the complete future lifetime?
Is the total time they survive for
Describe curtate future lifetime
The complete future lifetime rounded down, or as the integer part of
What is probability mass function?
A Probability Mass Function (PMF) is a function that gives the probability of a discrete random variable taking on a specific value. It is used in probability theory and statistics to describe the distribution of discrete random variables.
