Chapter 11 Flashcards
1
Q
What are giant (jovian) planets made of? How do their densities compare with terrestrial planets?
A
Layered interiors with very high pressure and cores made of rock,
metals, and hydrogen compounds
– Very high pressure in Jupiter and Saturn can produce metallic hydrogen.
—The giant planets are less dense overall because they are made mainly of gases, and the inner rocky planets are more dense because they are made mainly of rock.
