Chapter 10.3 Forces and braking Flashcards
What is the definition of thinking distance?
thinking distance is the distance a vehicle travels in the time it takes for the driver to apply the brakes after realising they need to stop.
What is the definition of braking distance?
Braking distance refers to the distance a vehicle will travel from the point when its brakes are fully applied to when it comes to a complete stop.
What is the equation for stopping distance?
Stopping distance = thinking distance + braking distance
What are the forces that oppose the driving force of a vehicle?
There are two forces acting in opposition to the driving force, the friction with the road and the air resistance. The air resistance is much greater than the friction with the road when a vehicle is in motion.
What is the equation for the deceleration ‘a’ of a vehicle?
v^2 = u^ +2as (v^2 v squared) s-distance, u- initial speed v- final speed.
