Chapter 10 Vocab. Flashcards
Mechanical Weathering
The break down of rock into smaller pieces by physical means. This includes ice, wind, water, gravity, plants, and animals.
Abrasion
The action of rocks and sediment grinding against each other ad wearing away exposed surfaces.
Chemical Weathering
The chemical break down of rocks and minerals into new substances.
Acid Precipitation
Precipitation that contains acids due to pollution.
Oxidation
A chemical reaction in which a element, such as iron, combines with oxygen to form oxide.
Differential Weathering
A process by which softer, less weather-resistant rocks wear away, leaving harder, more weather-resistant rocks behind.
Soil
A loose mixture of small mineral fragments and organic material.
Humus
Small particles of decayed plant and animal material
Bedrock
The layer beneath soil.
Topsoil
The top layer of soil, which contains lots of humus.
Parent Rock
The rock that is the source of soil.
Weathering
The break down of rock into smaller &a smaller pieces.
Leaching
When rainwater from the surface travels down through horizons, dissolving rock from the soil above.
Soil Conservation
The various methods of which humans take care of soil.
Erosion
The process by which wind & water transport soil and sediments from one place to another.
