Activities of daily living
Basic self care activities.
Do not decrease in very late adulthood.
Ex: bathing, dressing, waking short distance, eating, using toilet.
Instrumental activities of daily living
Complex every day tasks.
Decrease in very late adulthood.
Ex: light housework, laundry, transportation, finances, telephone, medication.
Primary aging
Changes that are a normal part of the aging process.
Secondary aging
Caused by health compromising behaviors such as smoking or environmental factors such as pollution
Stages of accepting impending death:
Denial
Persons denies that death will occur.

Anger
Person projects their resentment and envy into others.

Bargaining
Individual starts bargaining in an attempt to postpone death

Depression
Individuals grieve about their own end of life nd about the ones that will be left behind.

Acceptance
Person accepts that the end is near and the struggle is over
Advance directives
Documents that give instructions about desired health care if they cannot speak for themselves
Living will
Describes medical treatment that one would choose for themselves if able to do so.
Hospice
People receive medical care in their homes
Loss
Severing of an attachment an individual has with a loved one or object.
Bereavement
The state of having suffered a loss
Grief
Normal internal reaction of an individual experiencing loss.
Grief work
To sever the attachment bond
Stages of accepting impeding death
Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance.
Palliative care
Active care for patients who have received a diagnosis of a serious, life-threatening illness.
Signs/symptoms of impending death
Lowered body temp Deeper and longer periods of sleep Decreased vision and hearing Increased secretions it the mouth and congestion Incontinence Restlessness and confusion Reduced need for rating and drinking Irregular breathing Increased signs of pain
Mourning
The external expression of grief
