Registration and license plate
must have license plate before towing a trailer
must have license plate at rear of trailer
Equipment
trailer must have working tail lights, brake lights and turn signals
trailers that weigh 2000lbs or 910kg does not require brakes
use extension mirrors if the trailer is wider than vehicle.
Towing a Trailer
allow more time and distance between oncoming vehicles and your own
slow moving vehicles move tow right of highway
take trailer longer to stop
if traffic builds, find safe place to stop off road to allow others to pass.
to turn left
approach turn slowly, extend vehicle to next lane without crossing for more room to turn.
begin turn with front of vehicle even with left side of intended lane
backing a trailer
have someone guide you
if no one to guide walk to the back to make sure the road is clear
reverse no faster than walking pace
begin backing by steering wheel opposite of the direction you want to go into avoid vehicle contact with trailer, turn to steer whee; one-quarter to one-half when trailer begins to turn, return the steering wheel. use only small steei=ring wheel movements.
be aware of large blind spots when backing to right.
