Chapter 10 - The Work Of The Sea Flashcards
What are destructive waves?
Destructive waves cause erosion during stormy weather
What is the fetch?
The fetch is the length of water over which the wind blows the waves. The longer the fetch, the greater the energy and eroding power of the waves.
What are prevailing winds?
Prevailing winds are winds that blow regularly from one direction
Name 3 ways the sea can erode.
Hydraulic action, abrasion and attrition
What is hydraulic action?
Hydraulic action is corrosion carried out by the force of the waves crashing and pounding against the coast. Air is trapped in cracks and compressed by incoming waves. As the pressure is released, this can cause a mini explosion, which can weekend and shattering the rocks.
What is abrasion?
The sea uses its load of rocks and stones to erode the coast
What is attrition?
The seas load is worn down as the pieces smash against each other so that the stones are smooth and made smaller.
What are constructive waves?
Constructive waves deposit more material than is taken away
