Jackson won more votes than anyone else, but did not get the majority. Clay had to choose who he would want to win, and he chose Adams.

When Adams won the election because of Clay, he chose Clay (against Monroe’s advice) to be his secretary of state. All of Jackson’s followers thought of this as a corrupt bargain.

Why was Andrew Jackson unique as president?
Some thought of him as a murderer (he killed someone in a duel), some accused him of adultery. He grew up in a log cabin. He was a lawyer, judge, land speculator, politician, Indian fighter, and planter. He was the first president from a state west of the original thirteen states and was the first president from a poor family.
