Chapter 10 - Ice Rescue Technician Flashcards
Squeezing the air from the lower to the higher areas of the suit, releasing trapped air from the neck area. This reduces the chance of a suit inversion in the water
Burping an immersion suit
Small spikes that can be attached to the sole of a boot or fin to provide traction to walking rescuers on ice
Crampons
Standard SCUBA fins, but with a larger foot pocket to allow larger boots to be used. Very effective with an immersion suit when swimming in open water
Drysuit fins
Small, ice-specific craft pushed onto the ice by rescuers. It spreads the weight effectively and lets rescuers operate with flotation, which is built into the pontoon
Ice-rescue-pontoon-style sleds
A small device twisted into the ice surface to be used as an anchor. Very quick to deploy and offers good strength in fairly thin ice.
Ice Screw
An assembly used to haul ice rescue victims up and across the ice, with some commercial models offering built-in flotation.
Rescue sling
Rope used to physically connect the rescuer to the shore, with control of the rope by the shore crew. Used to pull the ice rescuer back to shore when signaled to, and to help remove the victim and rescuer from the ice.
Tether line
A training prop with the flotation characteristics adjusted to provide more realistic training. It will sink if contact is lost by the rescuer
Water rescue mannequin
An operations-level ice rescuer transitioning to technician level has many major tasks to learn.
a) True
b) False

Which is a correct statement about the use of an ice rescue sled?
a) The sled is useful primarily for dragging personnel and equipment across the ice.
b) The rescuer lies alongside the victim on the sled
c) The sled is not designed to float under the load of a victim.
d) A rope tether is used to pull the sled to shore.
