Benefits of internal recruitment
- applicant may already be known to the department => no need for induction training
- faster than external recruitment
- cheaper than external advertising
- give internal staff career structure and chance to progress
- doesn’t need to get used to new style of management
Benefits of external recruitment
- Bring in new ideas and practices to the business
- avoid resentment from existing staff if one of their former colleagues is promoted above them
- standard of applicant could be higher than if just limited to internal staff applicant
On the job training
- Instruction at place of work.
- Often conducted either by HR management or department training officers
- cheaper
Off the job training
- All training undertaken away from the business
- Specialist training center could belong to the firm or outside course such as university
- Can introduce new ideas to the firm
- Expensive
Introduction training
introductory training program to familiarize new recruits with the systems used in the business and the layout of the business site
Staff appraisal
- Process of assessing the effectiveness of an employee judged against pre-set objectives
- Continuous process
- Undertaken annually
Advantage of training
- Improve and work performance - productively/efficiency
- Efficiency leads to cost saving - eg wages
- Improves business’ reputation - attracts better workers
Disadvantage of training
- It is expensive.Time consuming - can be low productivity in the short term
- Can lead to “brain-drain” - pressure on wages
- Some training can not be job specific
