Chapter 10 Human Development across Lifespan Flashcards
Extends from conception to birth, Is divided into 3 phases
Prenatal Period
The phase that takes place during the first 2 weeks of the Prenatal Period
Germinal Stage
The phase that takes place during weeks 3 to 8 during the Prenatal Period
Embryonic Stage
The phase that takes up the remaining 7 months of the prenatal period
Fetal Stage
Germinal Stage
Begins when a zygote is created through fertilization and rapid cell division, hence becoming a microscopic mass of multiplying cells that migrates along the fallopian tube to the uterus, where it becomes implanted in the uterine wall.
Implantation process
The process during the Germinal stage where the placenta begins to form, This allows oxygen and nutrients to pass to the fetus from the mothers blood stream, and allows bodily wastes to pass out to the mother
Embryonic stage
The stage in which the organs and bodily systems begin to form in the developing organism, Which is now known as an embryo. The most vulnerable stage. Because of the development of vital parts of the human body. Any big impact during this stage may cause a miscarriage or birth defects
Fetal Stage
Brings rapid bodily growth as muscles and bones begin to form and the fetus gains the ability of movement and a heartbeat. Light and touch as well as hear external sounds
Threshold of Viability
the age at which a baby can survive in the event of a premature birth (Within 23 weeks and 25 weeks)
What age does a fetus begin to move and have a heartbeat
16 weeks
What age are a fetus’s visual and auditory senses functional
24 weeks
What age are fetus’s able to register light, touch, and hear external sounds?
32 weeks
Attachment
refers to the close emotional bonds of affection that develop between infants and their caregivers, Most commonly the mother
Separation Anxiety
Begins around 6-8 months where the infant begins to show a pronounced preference from their mother’s company and emotional distress when separated from her
Harry Harlow
The researcher known for removing monkeys from their mothers at birth, and raising them in a lab with two types of artificial mothers, One was made of terrycloth ideal for cuddling, Other made from wire and could not provide comfort
