Q

John Owen says “All theology is founded on covenants.” Describe this as pre and post-fall theology.

A

All theology is based on two covenants:
1. one is built on God’s covenant with Adam and is based on works.

  1. The other is founded on the Messiah and is based on grace.

With the covenants of grace, since the covenant changes so does the way humanity relates to God.

Q

What are the 3 primary reasons for supernatural revelation?

A
  1. We need God to know God.
    - Each time God enters into covenant he reveals new information about himself.
  2. If theology is essentially knowing God, then it must take the shape of covenant.
  3. The Bible is the place where we meet God in covenant.

Q

What is the Covenant of Redemption?

A

It is a pre-temporal agreement between the members of the Trinity, specifically Father and Son.

It is a distinction between the covenant God made with us concerning Christ and the covenant the Father made with the Son.

It is a relationship with His Son concerning the elect. That is, salvation of God’s people.

It is a covenant that takes place in eternity, outside of space and time.

Q

What is the difference between the Covenant of Grace and the Covenant of redemption?

A

The Covenant of Grace is God’s relationship with the elect concerning his Son, Christ.
- this takes place in time/history.

the Covenant of Redemption is a covenant between the father and the Son concerning the elect.
- Takes place outside of time, in eternity.

***The Covenant of Redemption in eternity ensures the Covenant of grace in history.

Q

How does the Covenent of Redemption effect the Old Testament?

A

Ephesians 1:4 tells us “he chose us in him before the foundation of the world…”

This pre-temporal agreement between the father and the Son allows for believers throughout all-time.

Those before Christ had faith in the coming Messiah.
