Chapter 10 - Composite materials and technical textiles Flashcards
Composite materials
They are formed by two or more very different materials are combined to created a new material with improved properties/functions.
Examples of composite materials
Glass
Carbon-fibre reinforced plastic
Steps of creation of composite materials (generally)
1) prepare a mould or former.
2) apply release agent to the mould/former.
3) apply the first resin coat to mould.
4) apply GRP matting on the top.
5) apply another coat.
6) repeat the resin coat process.
7) seal vacuum bag with work piece inside.
8) place in the oven.
9) release work piece from mould.
10) trim and finish the work piece.
Release agent
a substance applied to a surface, typically the surface of a mould or container, to prevent other substances from sticking to it.
Glass reinforce plastic (appearance)
Glass fibre matting is covered with smooth plastic resin (gel coat) which sets hard with high gloss finish. It is easily coloured and complex shapes can be formed.
Glass reinforce plastic (characteristics)
Light weight, good strength- weight ratio, heat resistance, water proof.
Glass reinforce plastic (uses)
Car and truck body parts, liquid storage tanks, pipes helmets, seatings.
Carbon-fibre reinforce plastic (appearance)
Cloth woven from individual stands, the interlacing provides an interesting and modern aesthetic, available in different patterns, can be coloured but frequently left natural.
Carbon-fibre reinforce plastic (characteristics)
Very high strengthen-to- weight ratio, good tensile strengthen but not good compressive strengthen, stiff and rigid, very expensive, water proof, resistant to chemicals.
Carbon-fibre reinforce plastic (uses)
Super cars and sports cars, top-end sport equipment, boats musical instruments, developed for prosthetic uses.
Gore-tex (appearance)
A very thin membrane sandwiched between a liner and outer material.
Gore-tex (characteristics)
Water proof, wind proof, breathable fabric; moisture vapour can escape.
Gore-tex (uses)
Outdoor clothing from skiwear to mountain wear, walking boots cross country trainers, gloves, sportswear.
Polyparaphenylene (Kevlar) (appearance)
Natural yellowish- gold material which also comes dyed in many colours. Woven texture from fine to course weave.
Polyparaphenylene (Kevlar) (characteristics)
Extremely strong and hard wearing, excellent cut and tear resistant, high thermal protection, non flammable, good chemical resistance.
