What is a worldview?
A worldview is a deeply felt assumption or basic premise about how the world is.
People differ in their orientations to the world at fundamental levels
What is is value?
- Is a belief about how the world should be
- Differ from world views in that these are often discussed among people, sometimes debated and held up as ideals to which people should aspire.
What is a norm?
A norm is a behavior that conforms to and therefore reinforces values. These behaviors are culturally grounded in notions of appropriateness.
Examples of individualism/collectivism worldview dimension.
Basic question: who am I?
Clarifying questions: am I an individual first and foremost or am I a member of a group first and foremost.
Example of ascription/achievement worldview dimensions.
- Basic question: how do people gain their position in society?
- Clarifying question: are people given there positions in society or do they have to work for and achieve their position in society?
Examples of mastery/adaptive world view dimension.
Basic question: how do people orient to the natural environment?
Clarifying question: do people shape the environment to meet their needs or do people adapt to the environment and live according to its rhythms and patterns?
Be able to identify the narrative teaching functions.
A narrative is a retelling of events from a specific point of view
Functions:
1. They provide us with info about our place in the world relative to society and other people. (In this way they help us shape our identities)
2. Narratives tell about how the world works in both general terms and in particular contexts.
3. Narratives tell us how to act in the world.
4. Narratives tell us how to evaluate the world around us in terms of good and bad, right and wrong.
