Chapter 10 Flashcards

1
Q

8 step procedure for hypothesis test for large samples

A
  1. ) state population characteristics of interest
  2. ) state null hypothesis (Ho - original)
  3. ) state alt hypothesis (Ha - what you test, greater/less/equal)
  4. ) state significance level (a, usually .05 if you don’t know it)
  5. ) name the test and state requirements needed for test
  6. ) state test statistic and compute value
  7. ) determine p value (reject Ho if p value is less than or equal to a; fail to reject Ho if p value is greater than a)
  8. ) state conclusion in context - if fail to reject Ho, talk about results in terms of Ha

Q

controlling type 1 and type 2 errors

A
  1. ) for any fixed a, an increase in sample size “n” will cause a decrease in B. the larger the n, the higher the power.
  2. ) for any fixed n, an increase in “a” will increase B. The smaller the significance, the lower the power.
  3. ) to decrease both a and B, increase the sample size

Q

raise power of hypothesis test

A
  1. ) increase sample size n
  2. ) decrease variation
  3. ) move alternative hypothesis farther from Ho
  4. ) increase alpha (a= prob of type 1 error)
    * as you increase power, you decrease B (prob of type 2 error) and increase a (prob of type 1)
