Chapter 10 Flashcards
What does absorption spectrum mean?
plot of
wavelengths
absorbed by a
pigment
-Is like a chart that shows which colors of light are absorbed and which aren’t
What does action Spectrum mean?
plot
of photosynthetic rate
against wavelength of light.
-Which colors of light help plants do their job best!!
What does autotroph mean?
A plant or other living thing can make its own food.
What a Bundle sheath cell?
-is like a special helper cell in plant leaves that helps with photosynthesis, the process plants use to make food.
-like bodyguards that help the plant make food efficiently and protect the important part of the leaf.
What is photosynthesis?
Energy from sunlight is captured and used to convert CO2 to more complex carbon compounds.
What is Stomata?
Pores on leaf surface where CO2 enters and O2 and H2O exit.
What is light reactions?
Converts light energy to chemical energy as ATP and NADPH.
What is light Independent reaction(AKA Carbon reaction/Calvin cycle)
Uses the ATP and NADPH plus CO2 to produce carbohydrates.
what is electromagnetic radiation?
Propagated as waves and as particles.
What is photons?
Packets of energy
What is pigments?
molecules that absorb specific wavelengths in the visible range.
What is Chlorophyll?
A pigment in photosynthesis that absorbs blue and red light and scatters green.
What is Photosystem?
Multi-protein light-harvesting complex in the thylakoid.
What Is light reactions?
They occur in the thylakoids and require water and light.
What is light harvesting complexes?
Like a group of tiny solar panels that help the plant collect sunlight and turn it into energy for making food.
