Chapter 10 Flashcards
Vocabulary
One of two paired chromosomes. One from each parent that carries genes for a specific trait at the same location.
homogeneous chromosomes
A haploid sex cell formed during Meiosis that can combine with another haploid sex cell and produce a diploid fertilized cell.
gamete
Process in which haploid gametes combine. Forming a diploid cell with 2N chromosomes with N chromosomes from the sperm and egg cells.
fertilization
Cell with half the number of chromosomes N as a 2N cell.
haploid
Having two copies of each of the chromosomes.
diploid
Reduction division process occurring only in reproductive cells in which 2N cells produce 4N cells.
meiosis
Exchange of chromosomal segments between a pair of homologous chromosomes during prophase 1 of Meiosis.
crossing over
The science of Heredity
genetics
Alternative form that a single gene may have a particular trait.
allele
Mendel’s name for a specific trait that appeared in the F1 generation.
dominant
A trait that is expressed only when a genotype is homozygous.
recessive
Organism with two of the same alleles for a specific trait.
homozygous
Organism with two different alleles for a specific trait
heterozygous
An organisms allele pairs.
genotype
Observable characteristics of something resulting from the interaction of it’s genotype.
phenotype
