Farewell Address
Washington’s farewell speech, printed in newspaper. He said-“the US should avoid permanent alliances and should choos only temporary alliances”
Alien Laws
- raised the residence requirements for citizenship from 5 to 14 years
- allowed the president to deport or jail undesirable foreigners
Sedition Act
Anyone who impedes government policies or falsely accuses officials of wrongdoing face a heavy fine and imprisonment
Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions
- written by Madison and Jefferson in response to alien and sedition acts
- federal government had exceeded its constitutional power
