Chapter 1 - Water And Carbohydrates Flashcards
Monomers
A single molecule that can be bound with the same or similar molecules
Polymer
When the same or similar monomers bind together to form polymers
Dimer
Two monomers bonded together, forms water
Condensation reaction
When monomers bind to other monomers, and a H from one monomer and a OH from the other monomer is removed to produce water and a polymer
Hydrolysis reaction
When water is added to the polymer to break the bond and produce monomers
Formula of carbohydrates
(CH2O)x
Where x is variable
E.g glucose (C6H12O6)
What are carbohydrates used for?
They provide energy and they are used to build body structures
Monosaccharides
Single sugar units
Disaccharide
Two combined sugar units
Polysaccharide
Long chains of sugar units
C3H6O3
Triose
E.g glyceraldenhyde
C5H10O5
Pentose
E.g ribose
C6H12O6
Hexose
E.g glucose, fructose, galactose
What monosaccharides is maltose made of?
Glucose and glucose
What monosaccharides is lactose made of?
Galactose and glucose
