Chapter 1 Vocab Flashcards
Cytology
restricts the study to individual cellular structure
Histology
the study of the microscopic structure of tissues.
Palpation
act of feeling with the hand; the application of the fingers with light pressure to the surface of the body for the purpose of determining the condition of the parts beneath in physical diagnosis.
Auscultation
the action of listening to sounds from the heart, lungs, or other organs, typically with a stethoscope, as a part of medical diagnosis.
Homeostasis
keeping the organ system of the body in balance (maintaining a stable environment)
Feedback loops (pos-neg)
Positive feedback loops enhance or amplify changes; this tends to move a system away from its equilibrium state and make it more unstable. Negative feedbacks tend to dampen or buffer changes; this tends to hold a system to some equilibrium state making it more stable.
Scientific method
a method of procedure that is consisting in systematic observation, measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses.
Experimental design
Experimental design is the process of planning a study to meet specified objectives.

Controls
Z
Placebo
harmless pill, medicine, or procedure prescribed more for the psychological benefit to the patient than for any physiological effect.
Double-blind method
of, relating to, or being an experimental procedure in which neither the subjects nor the experimenters know which subjects are in the test and control groups during the actual course of the experiments—compare open-label, single-blind

B
Psychosomatic effect
disease which involves both mind and body. Some physical diseases are thought to be particularly prone to be made worse by mental factors such as stress and anxiety.
