Chapter 1 Vocab Flashcards
Chemical
A substance that has a definite composition
Chemistry
Study of the composition, structure, and properties of matter and the changes it undergoes
Mass
The measure of the amount of matter
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space
Atom
Smallest unit of an element that retains all of the properties of that element
Element
Pure substance that can not be broken down by normal means
Compound
A substance that is made up of two or more elements that are chemically bonded
Extensive Properties
Properties that depend on the amount of matter present
Intensive Properties
Properties that do not depend on the amount of matter present
Physical Properties
Characteristics that can be observed or measured without changing the chemical’s make up
Physical Change
Change that does not change the substance’s chemical properties
Change of State
Physical change in a substance from one state to another
Solid
Matter with a definite volume and shape
Liquid
Matter with a definite volume but no definite shape
Gas
Matter with no definite volume or shape
