Population
Whole set of items of interest
Census
Observes every member of a population
Sample
A selection of observations taken from a subset of the population which is used to find out information about the population as a whole
Sampling units
Individual units of a population
Sampling frame
A list of individually named/numbered sampling units
Simple random sampling
Every sample of size n has an equal chance of being selected
Systematic sampling
Elements chosen at regular intervals from an ordered list
Stratified sampling
Population divided into mutually exclusive strata and a random sample is taken from each
Quota sampling
A sample that represents the characteristics of the whole population is selected
Opportunity sampling
Sample from people available at the time of the study and fitting the characteristics you look for
