Chapter 1 Vocab Flashcards
Health
a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
Disease
abnormal condition affecting the health of an organism and is characterized by specific signs and symptoms.
Symptoms
the features of a disease recognized by a patient and/or their doctor. Symptoms can include nausea, fatigue, irritability, and pain.
Why is Protein important?
Necessary for tissue formation, cell reparation, and hormone and enzyme production. It is essential for building strong muscles and a healthy immune system.
Why are carbohydrates important?
Provide a ready source of energy for the body and provide structural constituents for the formation of cells
Why is fat important?
Provides stored energy for the body, functions as structural components of cells, and also as signaling molecules for proper cellular communication. It provides insulation to vital organs and works to maintain body temperature.
Why are vitamins important?
Regulate body processes and promote normal body-system functions.
Why are minerals important?
Regulate body processes, are necessary for proper cellular function, and comprise body tissue.
Why is water important?
Transports essential nutrients to all body parts, transports waste products for disposal, and aids with body temperature maintenance.
Malnutrition
refers to one not receiving proper nutrition and does not distinguish between the consequences of too many nutrients or the lack of nutrients, both of which impair overall health.
Undernutrition
characterized by a lack of nutrients and insufficient energy supply
Over-Nutrition
characterized by excessive nutrient and energy intake
Obesity
Obesity is defined as a metabolic disorder that leads to an over-accumulation of fat tissue.
Vitamin A healing properties
Helps to enable the epithelial tissue (the thin outer layer of the body and the lining that protects your organs) and bone cells form.
Vitamin C healing properties
Helps form collagen, an important protein in many body tissues.
Protein healing properties
Facilitates tissue formation.
Fat healing properties
Play a key role in the formation and function of cell membranes.
Carbohydrates healing properties
Fuel cellular activity, supplying needed energy to support the inflammatory response that promotes healing
Diet
Foods you choose to eat
Nutrients
Substances required by the body to perform basic functions.
Antioxidants
Antioxidants are substances that may protect your cells against free radicals, which may play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases. Free radicals are molecules produced when your body breaks down food or when you’re exposed to tobacco smoke or radiation.
Phytochemicals
Phytochemicals are plant-based bioactive compounds produced by plants for their protection. They strengthen the immune system.
