Chapter 1 Visual System Flashcards
What are the 3 coats or tunics of the eye ?
- Outer Fibrous Layer
- Middle Vascular Layer
- Inner Neural Layer
What is the eye’s outer fibrous layer of connective tissue formed by?
Cornea and Sclera
What is the eye’s middle vascular layer formed by?
Iris, Ciliary Body, and Choroid
What is the inner neural layer made up from ?
Retina
What are the 3 spaces within the globe ?
Anterior Chamber
Poster Chamber
Vitreous Chamber
What is the main purpose of the outer dense connective tissue ?
Provide protection and maintain shape of globe.
Uvea is also know as what layer ?
Vascular layer
Uvea (vascular) layer is made up of what 3 structures?
Iris, Ciliary Body, Choroid
What is the Iris ?
A diaphragm to regulate the amount of light entering pupil.
What is the Ciliary Body ?
A muscle like structure that produces the components of the aqueous humor and controls the shape of the crystalline lens.
What is the choroid ?
An anastomosing network of blood vessels with dense capillary surrounding the retina and supplies nutrients to the outer layer of the retina.
What does the retina do ?
Complex biochemical processes change light into neural signals
What is Hyperopia ?
Distance from the Cornea to the retina is too SHORT. Causing focus point to occur behind the retina.
What is myopia ?
Can occur because LENS and CORNEA are too STRONG or because the eye to too LONG. Focus point happens before the retina.
What is the radius of curvature of the cornea ?
Approximately 8mm
