Chapter 1 - Using Tech To Change The World Flashcards
Computer Forensics
Analyzing computer systems with specific techniques to gather potential legal evidence.
Data Mining
A means to process data and find patterns to forecast many different types of trends.
Computer
An electronic machine operating from instructions.
Information Processing Cycle
When a computer accepts data, processes data, outputs information and can store data and information for future use.
Data
Facts and numbers that by themselves do not give us enough information.
Information
Data used together becoming meaningful and useful.
Bits
A language consisting of two digits 0 and 1.
Byte
Eight bits that create a character.
Hardware
The physical components of a computer.
System Unit
The case that protects the internal components.
Motherboard
The foundation for the PC.
CPU (Central Processing Unit)
Interprets and carries out instructions.
RAM (Random Access Memory)
Temporary holding area
Peripheral Devices
External components
Memory
1) RAM
2) Temporary (when power is turned off data, info, and instructions are gone)
3) Your workspace, more RAM better performance
Storage
1) Disk drive, USB flash drives, CD’s
2) Permanent (when the power is turned off data, info, and instructions are stored on the device
3) Storage area for future use
System Software
Controls the operation of the computer and its devices
Operating System
The interface between the user, applications software and the hardware
Utility Software
Performs system maintenance
Application software
Performs a specific task for the user
Installing software vs Running software
You install software once, and then you run/execute the software many times
User Interface
Part of the operating system that enables individuals to interact with the computer.
Network
A collection of computers connected together with communication devices and transmission media
Server
A computer that provides resources to other computers on a network
Clients
A computer that requests information from a server in a client/server network
(Such as your computer when you are connected to the Internet)
Computer Literate
To know and understand computers and their uses, to know their capabilities and limitations.
