Chapter 1 - Types Of Apparatus Equipped With A Pump Flashcards
NFPA 1901
Standard for automotive fire apparatus, contains the requirements of pumper design. Also specifies the minimum portable equipment that must be carried on all fire department pumpers
Rescue Pumper
Specially designed apparatus that combines the functions of both a rescue vehicle and a fire department pumper
Compressed Air Foam Systems (CAFS)
Generic term used to describe a high-energy foam- generation system consisting of a water pump, a foam proportioning system, and an air compressor (or other air source) that injects air into the foam solution before it enters a hoseline
Initial attack fire apparatus
Fire apparatus whose primary purpose is to initiate a fire attack on structural and wildland fires and support associated fire departments actions. Also known as midi-pumper or mini-pumper
Mini-Pumper
Small fire apparatus mounted on a pickup truck sized chassis, usually with a pump having a rated capacity less than 500 gpm (2000L/min) its primary advantage is speed and mobility, which enables it to respond to fires more rapidly than larger apparatus
Midi-Pumper
Apparatus sized between a mini-pumper and a full-sized fire department pumper, usually with a gross vehicle weight of 12,000 pounds (6,000 kg) or greater. The midi-pumper has a fire pump with a rated capacity generally not greater than 1,000 gpm (4,000 L/min)
Mobile Water Supply Apparatus
Locally known as Water tenders or tankers, are used to transport water to areas where a water system is nonexistent or inadequate
Wildland fire trucks
Commonly known as Brush trucks, Brush breakers, or booster apparatus. These vehicles often have pump capacities and water tanks of 500 gallons
NFPA 1906
Standard for Wildland Fire Apparatus
CAFS stands for?
Compressed Air Foam Systems
Many wildland fire apparatus are now equipped with?
(CAFS) Compressed air foam systems or other types of Class A foam systems
ARFF stands for?
Aircraft rescue and fire fighting
NFPA 414
Standard for aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicles
Fireboats
Vessel or watercraft designed and constructed for the purpose of fighting fires; provides a specified level of pumping capacity and personnel for the extinguishment of fires in the marine environment. Also known as Marine unit
Quint
An apparatus that serves as an engine and as a ladder truck; equipped with a fire pump, water tank, ground ladders, hose bed, and aerial device
Rescue Apparatus Equipped with fire pumps
These trucks may be equipped with small fire pumps and tanks in order to extinguish small fires and provide protective hose lines at extractions and other incidents. They also may feature foam proportioning equipment and a tank for foam concentrate. Not to be confused with rescue pumpers as they do not have the fire fighting capabilities of a full-sized fire department pumper
Trailer-mounted fire pumps
Not common in municipal fire departments although might serve as certain services such as long-term pumping operations, such as those involving fires at petroleum storage facilities or landfills
Inverter
Step-up transformer that converts a vehicles 12- or 24-volt DC current into 110- or 220-volt AC current
What are some common requirements for fire department pumpers
-ground ladders
-self-contained breathing apparatus
-forcible entry tools
-salvage tools and equipment
-portable water tank
-emergency medical equipment
What are some characteristics of initial attack fire apparatus?
Can be classified as a midi-pumper or mini-pumper. Mini-pumper being a small fire apparatus mounted on a pickup truck sized chassis. A midi-pumper is a size between a mini and a full size pumper.
What are two basic functions of mobile water supply apparatus on the fireground?
First the water tender may be used in a mobile shuttle operation. Second it may also be useful as a stationary reservoir or “nurse tender”.
Mobile shuttle operation
In this operation the water tender arrives at the designated dump site and either pumps off or uses the quick dump valve to off-load its water supply into folding portable water tanks. Once off-loaded the water tender returns to the fill site to reload and repeats the process.
Stationary reservoir (Nurse tender)
In this operation the apparatus is parked in close proximity to the fire scene. The pumpers connect to the water tender and use its supply during suppression operations. Knowing the limitations of your apparatus, water tank capacity, training and preplanning of your response area is paramount for this operation to function correctly.
What are some types of specialty fire apparatus and their uses?
Wildland fire apparatus- have a design that’s lightweight, highly maneuverable and all-terrain. These are meant to put out wildfires
Aircraft rescue and fire fighting-apparatus are used to provide immediate suppression of flammable liquid fires and suppression of Vapor’s from fuel spills.
Fireboats- may be used to protect hazards on and adjacent waterways.
Aerial Apparatus Equipped with fire pumps- have additional benefits on the fireground including the ability to supply its own master streams and extinguish small fires when engine company is not available. Example would be a Quint
Trailer mounted fire pumps- not common but serve in long term pump operations involving fires in a petroleum facilities or landfills
What are the two types of electrical power generators used in emergency services operations?
Portable generators may be operated in the compartment of an apparatus or carried to a remote location.
Vehicle-mounted generators have a larger capacity than portable units. Provides power for the apparatus floodlights as well as any portable electrically operated equipment
