Chapter 1 Topic 3 Flashcards
What is a binomial nomenclature
It is a binomial name that must contain two-parts.
Must contain Genus name and Species/Specific name.
Describe a hierarchical classification?
Classification is hierarchical constituted of groups called ranks based on similar appearance, structures and functions.
How to extract information from a binomial nomenclature
Genus: Look at the first word, which provides the broader classification.
Species: The second word narrows it down to the specific organism.
Differentiate between taxonomic ranks in Linnaean System.
Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Family, Genus, Species.
how to classify organisms based on taxonomic ranks.
determine domain: Classify by looking at the basic differences in how the cells are built and put together.
Determine the Kingdom: Based on the organism’s cellular complexity, mode of nutrition, and other general characteristics.
Determine the Phylum: Classify based on major structural features
Determine the class: More specific shared characteristics within a phylum, such as body structure or reproductive features.
Determine the family: Group organisms that are closely related within an order, sharing evolutionary history and physical features.
Determine the genus: Group species that are very closely related and similar in many ways, often sharing a recent common ancestor.
Determine the Species: he most specific rank, grouping organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring. Species often share very similar physical traits and genetic composition.
