What are the terms to be defined?
Factor
Poor Reading Comprehension
Senior High School
What is the conceptual definition of “Factor”?
circumstance or condition that affects the outcome of something (Cambridge Dictionary, 2024)
What is the operational definition of “Factor”?
fact or situation that influences poor reading comprehension of students
What is the conceptual definition of “Poor Reading Comprehension”?
lack of skill in using and comprehending written language forms important for individuals (Bruggink et. al., 2022)
What is the operational definition of “Poor Reading Comprehension”.?
lack of skill that helps a student fully understand english reading materials for them to apply such skill to complete school activities effectively
What is the conceptual definition of “Senior High School?”
- two years of specialized secondary education that prepares students for their career path
- requirement for college admission
-allows students to take subjects they would normally take in college ((Senior High School in the Philippines: An Overview – Courses in the Philippines: College, TESDA, Online, Short Courses, n.d.)
What is the operational definition of “Senior High School?”
- the transition to college to emphasize the importance of reading comprehension in shs students
What is in chapter 1?
- problem statement and its importance
- research gap
- research aims
- relevance of the study
- plan in disseminating results
- research purpose
- research questions
- theories supporting the study
- scope and limitation
- significance of research
What is in chapter 2?
- review of related literature
- readings, studies, ideas of researchers and interested parties on reading comprehension
What is in Chapter 3?
- research design
- study population
- data collection techniques
- application of qualitative research methodology
- outlines data collection, analysis and issues associated with participant confidentiality
What is the problem stated in this study?
Poor reading comprehension of the english language is important as it will hinder the students from achieving their full potential in school, most importantly shs students.
Shs students with reading comprehension is a special problem as shs is the transition to college.
Evidence in Indonesia on poor reading comprehension
Indonesian secondary school students struggle to comprehend english texts despite their ongoing english education (Nanda & Azmy, 2020)
Evidence in Malaysia on poor reading comprehension
Despite the fact that english has been a mandatory subject for 10+ years, Malaysian students still struggle to comprehend English texts (Samat et. al., 2019)
Evidence in Thailand on poor reading comprehension
English is a mandatory subject for g11 students; however, students still struggle to read English texts (Phutthabun, 2023)
Evidence in Metro Manila on poor reading comprehension
- it was observed that shs students had poor reading skills, low reading performance, and thus poor reading comprehension (Urbano et. al., 2021)
Evidence in Visayas on poor reading comprehension
- the study investigated the factors on the poor reading comprehension of g11 students
The factors:
- lack of diverse reading materials
- same teaching methods for all students
- teaching has inadequate focus on critical thinking and comprehension skills
- difficulty non-native english speaker filipinos
- not much interest in reading (affects motivation and comprehension)
(Almoroto et. al., 2019)
Evidence in Tagum on poor reading comprehension
- G12 students struggled understanding english expository texts.
- Their findings show that the higher their reading ability, the better their reading comprehension
- They had low reading abilities and comprehension and reading anxiety
What is the research gap?
- the study will explore the lived experiences of shs students with poor reading comprehension, rather than observing how they cope with such
- it will examine the factors causing poor reading comprehensions rather than just difficulties they encounter reading essays
- it will study how the factors affect academic performance
- the researchers themselves will provide insights based on the results, not the students
Research Objectives
- What are the factors affecting students’ poor reading comprehension?
- How do these identified factors affect students’ academic performance?
- What are the insights from the results of the study?
Significance of the study
- it’s a global challenge that affects filipino students
- many shs students still struggle with reading comprehension, and it’s important that they overcome this challenge as reading is essential for academic success. this research will help them
- helps to provide early detection and prevention
- it will help students, educators, future researchers, etc.
Plan in disseminating results of the study
- it will be shared by the school at the divisional level
- a hard copy will be in the library
- we wish for this research to be shared to other schools
