Chapter 1: Tides Flashcards
Why do we have tides?
We have tides due to differential gravitational force from the sun and, more predominantly, the moon.
What is the name of a high tide directly underneath the moon?
A sublunar high tide.
What is the name of a high tide perpendicular to the moon?
An antipodal high tide.
What are spring tides?
Higher high tides and lower low tides. This is because of the moon and suns gravitational force working together as they are aligned.
When do spring tides occur
When the sun and earth are in alignment
What are neap tides?
Moderate tides with no large change; higher low tides and lower high tides.
When do neap tides occur?
When the sun and moon are at right angles to each other.
What phase of the moon is occurring at a neap tide?
First quarter or third quarter
What phase of the moon do spring tides occur?
New moon and full moon.
