Chapter 1: The Water Cycle Flashcards
Condensation
Water vapour in the air gets cold and changes back into liquid, forming clouds.
precipitation
occurs when so much water has condensed that air cannot hold it anymore. The clouds get heavy and water falls back to earth in the form of rain, sleet, hail or snow.
evaporation
occurs when the sun heats up water and turns it into vapour or steam. The water vapour or steam leaves the river, lake or ocean and goes into the air.
Transpiration
Transpiration is the process of water movement through a plant and its evaporation from aerial parts, such as leaves, stems and flowers
Surface run-off
the flow of water that occurs when excess water flows over the Earth’s surface.
infiltration
the process by which precipitation or water soaks into subsurface soils and moves into rocks through cracks and pore spaces
