Chapter 1 - The Science Of Matter Flashcards
(27 cards)
What is chemistry?
The science that investigates & explains the structure & properties of matter.
What is the macroscopic level?
It is based on behavior & composition of matter (visible)
What is the submicroscopic level?
It is the hidden structure that influences its behavior (non visible)
What is a qualitative observation?
An observation made without measurement.
What is a quantitative measurement?
An observation made with measurement.
What is a substance?
Matter with the same fixed composition & properties.
What is a pure substance?
Every bit of matter is the same substance.
What is a mixture?
A combination of 2 or more substances that can be separated by physical processes.
What are some examples of a physical change?
Boiling, melting, dissolving, crystallizing, etc.
What is a heterogenous mixture?
A mixture where individual substances can be identified.
What is a homogenous mixture or solution?
A mixture that has uniform & is the same throughout.
What is an alloy?
A solid solution that contains different metals & sometimes nonmetallic substances.
What is a solute?
Th substance being dissolved.
What is a solvent?
Substance that dissolves the solute.
What is an aqueous solution?
A solution where the solvent is water.
What are the two types of pure substances?
Compounds & elements.
What is the simplest form of matter?
An element.
How many elements are there & how many occur naturally on earth?
118 total elements & 90.
What is a compound?
Chemical combination of 2 or more different elements joined together.
What is a chemical formula?
Combination of chemical symbols that shows the elements that make up a compound & how many atoms there are of each.
What is volatile?
When something is able to change to gas at room temperature.
What is density?
Amount of mass contained in a unit of volume; D=m/v.
What is a chemical change or reaction?
Change of one or more substances into another substance.
What is the law of conservation of mass?
Matter is neither created nor destroyed in a chemical change.
