Chapter 1 The Science Of Biology Flashcards
Observation
The use of one or more senses to gather information
Sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste
Science
Organized way of using evidence to learn about the natural world; also the body of knowledge that scientists have built up after years of using this process
Hypothesis
It is the possible explanation for a set of observations or the creation of a question of study
Biology
The study of science in the living world, seek understanding
Data
Evidence, information gathered from observations and experiments
Homeostasis
The process by which organisms maintain a relatively stable internal environment
Metabolism
The set of chemical reactions of when an organism builds up or breaks down materials as it carries out its life process
Stimulus
A signal to which an organism responds too
Cell
The collection of living matter enclosed by a barrier that separates the cell from its surroundings, the basic unit of all forms of life
Theory
A well tested explanation that combines a variety of observations
Spontaneous generation
Hypothesis (disproven) stating that life could arise from non living matter
Controlled experiment
A test of the effect of a single variable by changing it while keeping all variables the same
Manipulated variable
Factor in an experiment that a scientist purposely changes; also known as independent variable
Conclusion
Is the results and data collected that concluded to an explanation describing the final result
Biosphere
Part of Earth in which life exists including land, water and air or atmosphere
Community
Assemblage of different populations that live together in a defined area
Cell culture
Group of cells grown in a nutrient solution from a single original cell
Compound light microscope
A microscope that allows light to pass through a specimen and uses two lenses to form an image
Electron microscope
A microscope that forms an image by focusing beams of electrons onto a specimen
Cell fractionation
Technique in which cells are broken into pieces and the different cell parts are separated
Ecosystem
Collection of all the organisms that live in a particular place, together with their non living environment
Organism
Group of tissues that work together to perform closely related functions
Populations
Group of individuals of the same species that live in the same area
SEM
Scan a narrow beam of electrons back and forth across the surfaces of a specimen
