Chapter 1: The Science Of Biology Flashcards
What is a dependent variable?
Dependant variables are controlled variables, you have the ability to change them. Dependant variables are on the y axis.
What are the steps in the scientific method?
1) ask a question
2) research
3) construct a hypothesis
4) test hypothesis (experiment)
5) observe
6) analyze data
7) conclusion
What is an independent variable?
Independant variables are deliberately changed, controls itself. Independant variables belong on the x axis.
What is a control group?
A control group is exposed to the same conditions as the restof the experimental group except for one independant.
What is data?
Data is information gathered from observations.
What is a peer review and why is it essential to the scientific community?
A peer review is the process by which the community of scientists evaluate and reproduce new scientific experiments. It is important in order to avoid fraud and information bias.
How do scientific theories differ from general theories? What is e difference between a theory and a hypothesis?
A scientific theory has evidence while a general theory is just a guess. A hypothesis is a guess of something that will happen and be tested and a theory is based on a hypothesis and it’s observations.
