belly side/backside
What is Proximal/distal ?
nearer attached end/farther from the point of attachment
fingers are distal to the elbow
Knee is proximal to the toes
What is superficial/deep
external towards body surface/ internal away from the body surface
What is Median (midsagittal) plane ?
divides body down the midline into equal parts
What is Frontal (coronal) plane ?
divides the body or organ into front and back parts (shoulder to shoulder)
What is Transverse plane ?
divides body horizontally into top and bottom parts
What does the axial region include ?
Head, neck, trunk
What does the appendicular region include ?
Limbs (appendages or extremities)
What does the Dorsal Body Cavity include ?
Cranial cavity which encases the
- brain
- spinal cavity
What does the Ventral Body Cavity include ?
Thoracic cavity which is separate from the ventral cavity
- Dome shaped and contains Heart, lungs and are protected from bony rib cage
Abdominopelvic Cavity includes…
- stomach, intestines, liver, and other organs
Pelvic Cavity
- enclosed by bony pelvis and contains reproductive organs, bladder, and rectum
What is a serous membrane ?
walls of the ventral body cavity and outer surfaces of organs that are covered with a thin, double layered membrane
What is the Parietal serosa ?
part of the membrane lining the cavity walls
What is the Visceral serosa ?
covers the the external surface of the organs within the cavity

What’s in the Right hypochondriac region?
Location?
Liver, Gallbladder
overlying the lower ribs
What’s in the Epigastric region?
Location?
Stomach
Superior to the umbilical region

Location?
Diaphragm, Spleen
overlying lower ribs
What’s in the Right lateral (lumbar) region?
Location?
Ascending colon of large intestine,
Between the ribs and hip bones, lateral to umbilical region
What’s in the umbilical region?
Location?
Small intestine, transverse colon of large intestine, includes umbilicus (navel)
centermost region
What’s in the Left lateral (lumbar) region?
Location?
Descending colon of large intestine
Between the ribs and hip bones, lateral to umbilical region
