Chapter 1: The Human Body: An Orientation Flashcards
Chemical level
Atoms combine together with matter to create molecules
Cellular level
Cells are made up of molecules that contain similarly types of cells found in the _____ level
Tissue level
Once formed together by the cells and molecules the ______ level is made up of numerous tissues
Homeostasis
The process that maintains the stability of the human bodies internal environment in response to changes in external conditions
Define anatomy and physiology and describe their subdivisions.
Anatomy: studies the structure of the body parts and their relationship to one another.
Physiology: functions the body, how the body works and carries out life-substaining activities.
Subdivision- both work together protecting the body, covering and fighting against harmful diseases ect.
Negative feedback and mechanisms
Cause the variables to change in a direction OPPOSITE to that of the initial change, returning it to its “ideal” value; thus the name “negative” feedback mechanisms.
Positive feedback mechanisms
The result or response enhances the original stimulus so that the response is accelerated.
The mechanism is positive because the change that results proceeds in the SAME direction as the initial change, causing the variable to deviate further and further from its original value or range
Relationship between homeostatic imbalance and disease
Body’s control systems become less efficient and our internal environment becomes less and less stable
Increases our risk for illness and produce the changes we associate with aging
