Chapter 1 - The Human Body: An Orientation Flashcards
anatomy
study of the structure of the human body
morphology
the science of form
physiology
study of body function
functional anatomy
a description of the anatomy of a body part accompanied by an explanation of its function, emphasizing the structural characteristics that contribute to that function
Gross Anatomy
(gross = large)
study of body structures that can be examined by the NAKED EYE
Ex: bones, lungs and muscles
dissection
“cut apart”
when connective tissue is removed from between the body organs so that the organs can be seen more clearly. Then, the organs are cut open for viewing
regional anatomy
all structures in a single body region, such as the abdomen or head, are examined as a GROUP
systemic anatomy
all the organs with related functions are studied together
EX:
muscular system ==> look at all the muscles of the body
BEST FOR RELATION STRUCTURE TO FUNCTION
surface anatomy
study of shapes and markings (landmarks) on the surface of the body that reveal the underlying organs
used to identify the muscles that bulge beneath the skin in weight lifters
clinicians use to locate blood vessels for placing catheters, feeling pulses, and drawing blood
microscopic anatomy or histology
“tissue study”
study of structures that are so small they can be seen only with. a microscope
==> cells and cell parts, groups of cells (TISSUES) and the microscopic details of the organs
developmental anatomy
traces the structural changes that occur in the body throughout the life span and the effects of aging
embryology
study of how body structures form and develop BEFORE birth
helps understand the complex design of the adult human body and helps to explain birth defects
pathological anatomy
deals with the structural changes in cells, tissues, and organs caused by disease
(pathology = study of disease)
radiographic anatomy
study of internal body functions by means of X-ray studies and other imaging techniques
Functional morphology
explores the functional properties of body structures and assesses the efficiency of their design
