Chapter 1: The Expected Messiah Flashcards
God’s Transcendence
Man not equal to God and must receive everything from him; man is indebted through obedience
God’s Immanence
Man Man is given primacy over other created things; he is created with a natural structure to receive God’s call to friendship.
Difference from creatures
Man is given primacy over other created things; he is created with a natural structure to receive God’s call to friendship.
Body & Soul
Not dualism; soul and body constitute one single essence (soul informs/animates the body); death breaks this unity and the man is no longer a person (St. Thomas Aquinas).
Man as person
Man acts freely and is, therefore, responsible; man is and is becoming (he must continue to progress forward in perfection); all is ordered toward searching for and knowing God.
Sanctifying Grace
God aids man by supernatural grace which allows us to share in his divine life, transforms our souls, and brings us into an adopted relationship with him.
Mutual Indwelling
God is present is man insofar as man is a creature; man is present in God as a member of God’s household.
Christ as Exemplar
Christ is truly the image of the Father who participates in the divine life to the fullest; man joins his earthly pilgrimage to Christ who restores the
image of man and all of creation.
