Chapter 1 The Earth Flashcards
Mantle
The mantle is semi melted molten rock under the crust
Crust
The crust is the earths outer skin and consists of solid rock
Core
The core is under the mantle it’s split in two layers the inner and outer it is the hottest part and it is melted molten rock
Vent
The vent is what the magma pours out of
Active
The volcano is still active
Dormant
The volcano has be dead for hundreds of years but may erupt again
Extinct
The volcano has not erupted in thousands of years not on record
Vent
The magma comes through the vent to reach the top of the volcano
Magma reservoir
We’re all the magma is built up
Destructive boundarie
A destructive boundarie is we’re plates pull apart and cracks for magma rises to fill the cracks
Constructive boundarie
A constructive boundarie is we’re plates are crashing into eachother and the heavier plate sinks
Mid-ocean ridge
A mid ocean ridge is were a line goes through an ocean and it’s an underwater mountain range which can erupt
Pangea
Pangea was when the earth was basically stuck together and then a destructive boundarie occurred and all the continents split
Plate tectonics
The theory is that under earth there are a bunch of plates that is what makes boundaries
Earthquake
A sudden movement or trembling of the earths crust
Fault line
The plate moves along the fault line during an earthquake
Tremor
The tremors spread out from the focus
Focus
The point deep in the earths crust were an earthquake begins
Epicentre
The point on the surface directley above the focus is the place tremors are strong
Aftershock
Earthquakes rarely last longer than a minute small tremors can occur after an earthquake they cause more damage because buildings are usually weakened
