Q

What are the four tenets of the cell theory?

A
  1. All living thing are made of cells
  2. Cell is the functional unit of life
  3. Cells only arise from pre-existing cells
  4. Cells cary genetic information through DNA which is passed from parent to daughter cell.

Q

In eukaryotic cells organelles are membrane bound through a phospholipid bilayer. What is the function of this layer?

A
  1. Allows for compartmentalization of functions

2. Phospholipid bilayer is a selective barrier (outer is hydrophilic, inner is hydrophobic)

Q

What is the structure of the nucleus like?

A
  • Nucleus is surrounded by nuclear membrane.
  • Nuclear pores in membrane allow for selective two-way exchange of material between cytoplasm and nucleus
  • Contain a nucleolus where ribosomal RNA is made

Q

What is the structure of the mitochondria like?

A
  • Two layers
  • Outer membrane: barrier between cytosol and mitochondria
  • Inner membrane contains cristae (folds) important for increase in surface area and ETC.
  • Space inside inner membrane is the matrix which is involved in ATP generation
