What is the biomedical model?

Life Expectancy
— Challenge #1 that health psychology addresses.
— 100 years ago, it was 50 years.
— Today it’s nearly 80.
— US is 34th in world life expectancy.
Pathogen
— Any disease-causing organism.
The World Health Organization’s definition of Health
— Says health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not only the absence of pathogens
Psychology
— The scientific study of behavior
Behavioral Medicine
— 1 of 2 branches that came from the psychosomatic movement
— Combines biomedical & behavioral science (esp. psychology), therefore an interdisciplinary
— Deals with prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation (PDTR)
Does psychology and sociology contribute DIRECTLY to physical outcomes?
— No. Only biological factors contribute DIRECTLY to physical health and disease.
Is behavioral medicine a branch of psychology?
— No.
— Behavioral medicine is 1of 2 fields that came from the psychosomatic movement
