Chapter 1 - Studying Biology Flashcards
1
Q
Importance of studying biology
A
- To understand the nature of life and appreciate the wonders of life
- To learn the relationships between organisms and the environment and a respect for all organisms —> increase awareness of many social issues related to biology such as (pollution, genetically modified food, cloning and conservation of endangered species)
- To apply bio knowledge in daily to improve our standard of living.
- To prepare a future career in medical field and environmental protection
2
Q
Scientific method used to study biology
A
- Making observations
- Asking questions
- Hypothesis
- Designing and doing experiment
- Analysis
- Conclusion
- If results supporting the hypothesis, the theory is established
- Otherwise, revise and reject the hypothesis
3
Q
Independent variable
A
The variable to be changed
4
Q
Dependent variable
A
Variable that may change with the independent variable, it is to be measured
5
Q
Hypothesis
A
A reasonable answer to the question to explain their observation
6
Q
Theory
A
A hypothesis supported by repeated experiments with a positive prediction and conclusion
7
Q
Characteristics of organisms
A
- N Nutrition - obtaining food by means such as photosynthesis and feeding
- R Respiration - break down food to release energy to support body activities
- E Excretion - removal of harmful metabolic wastes produced from chem reactions
- I Irritability - detection of stimuli and response to them
- M Movement - locomotion of animals for survival
- G Growth - increasing size and complexity
- R Reproduction - production of new individuals for continuation of species
