Naming Microorganisms:

A

o Linnaeus established the system of scientific nomenclature.
o Each organism has two names: the genus and specific epithet (SPECIES).
o Italicize or underline scientific names.
• Genus is capitalized.

Scientific Names:

A

o After the first use, scientific names may be abbreviated with the first letter of the genus and the full species name:
o Escherichia coli (E. coli):
• Honors the discoverer, Theodor Escherich.
• Describes the bacterium’s habitat –large intestine, or colon.

A

o 1665: Robert Hooke reported that living things were composed of little boxes, or cells.
o 1673-1723: Anton van Leeuwenhoek described live microorganisms.

Spontaneous Generation:

A

17
Q

Biogenesis:

A

The hypothesis that the living organisms arise from preexisting life.

18
Q

Louis Pasteur:

A

o FERMENTATION - conversion of sugar to alcohol – THINK BEER AND WINE.
o Pasteur showed microbes are responsible for fermentation and for food spoilage.
o Pasteurization: Wine producers with a problem – a nasty tasting product!
o Pasteurization is the application of a high heat for a short time.

19
Q

Joseph Lister:

A

o British Surgeon.

o Aseptic Techniques in Surgery.

20
Q

The Germ Theory of Disease:

A

o 1876: ROBERT KOCH.
o A SPECIFIC MICROBE causes a SPECIFIC DISEASE.
o Koch’s Postulates:
• SAME pathogen must be PRESENT in EVERY CASE of the disease.
• Pathogen must be isolated from diseased host and grown in pure culture.
• Pathogen from the pure culture must cause the disease when inoculated into a healthy, susceptible laboratory animal.
• Pathogen must be isolated from the inoculated animal and must be shown to be the original organism.
