Chapter 1: Representing Motion Flashcards
Define a particle
an object that can be represented as a mass at a single point in space
Define position
A location at a particular time.
Note: Distance plus direction - Vector
What is the origin of time?
t=0
Define displacement
change in position = final position - initial position
Define time intervals
change in time = final time - initial time
What is the equation of velocity? What sign can velocity be?
Velocity and direction can be (+) or (-).
What is the equation for speed? What sign is speed?
The sign of speed is always (+)
What is the equation for average speed?
Average speed and velocity over time interval delta t
What is velocity equivalent to on a graph?
Define scalar quantity
A physical quantity described by a single number
Define vector quantity
A vector quantity has both magnitude and direction. We graphically represent a vector as an arrow.
How are vectors represented graphically?
What does the length and direction of a vector arrow represent?
magnitude and direction of the arrow represents direction of the vector
Where is an object moving if the velocity = +30 m/s
the object is moving to the right or up
Where is an object moving if the velocity = -30 m/s
the object is moving to the left or down
