Inferior
Infer-lower; or-quality BELOW
Medial
Media- middle, -al, pertaining to; MIDDLE OF BODY
Lateral
Later- side, -al: pertaining to, SIDE
Proximal
Proxim-: near, -al: pertaining to; NEAR TO A PORTION OF THE BODY ex: the ear is PROXIMAL to the eyeball
Distal
Dist-: distance, -al: pertaining to; DISTANCE TO A PORTION OF THE BODY ex: the wrist is DISTAL to the elbow
Superficial
Super-: over or above, -fici: face, -al: pertaining to ABOVE ex: the naval is SUPERFICIAL to the groin
Deep
Deep, ex: the uterus is DEEPER then the heart
Central
Pertaining to the center
Peripheral
Away from the center (of the body), ex: the phalanges are the most PERIPHERAL to the body
Sagittal
Sagitta- arrow, -al: pertaining to; a vertical plane that divides the body into right and left sides FRONTALLY, ex: if you cut someone in half Sagittal, the nose would be split in half symmetrically, one eye per section, one lung per section.
Midsagittal
Mid- middle, -sagitta arrow, -al pertaining to; when a sagittal plane runs down the center of the body, creating EQUAL left and right sides. Ex: each section would have a symmetrical cut nose, one eyeball, and one lung, one arm, one leg, etc.
Frontal / Coronal
Coron- front, -al pertaining to; a vertical cut down the center of the body, separating the anterior and posterior. Ex: back of head, glutes, hamstrings, Achilles tendon on one side; other side has face, genitals, quads, and shins.
Transverse / Horizontal
Trans- across, through, -vers turn; a cut through the body horizontally. Ex: top half of body and lower half of body. If cut at naval, the breast, head, shoulders would be at top, legs, genitals, hips at bottom.
Longitudinal section
Longitudinal, a sagittal or frontal plane that refers to a section along the structure along the long axis of a structure. Ex: anything cute top to bottom
Cross section
A two dimensional view of a structure or tissue that has been cut at a right angle to its main axis, transverse section. Ex: cutting someone in half horizontally
Axial
Axilla- wing, -al pertaining to; relating to the center al axis of the body. The axial skeleton is the collection of bones that make up the bodies central core (skull, ribcage, vertebral column, sacrum, coccyx, and sternum)
Appendicular
Region of the body pertaining to the appendix
Abdominal
A Region of the body pertaining to the abdominal
Axillary
A region of the body Pertaining to the arm pit
Antebrachial
A region of the body Pertaining to the forearm
Brachial
A region of the body pertaining to the arm
Buccal
A region of the body pertaining to the cheek (mouth)
Coxal
A region of the body pertaining to the hip
Cranial
A region of the body pertaining to the skull
