Why was King Philip angry with England?
- for many years, English sailors have been stealing gold and silver from Spanish ships
- he himself as a catholic, heard that Queen Elizabeth executed Mary, Queen of Scots, and thought that a people who killed a catholic queen should be punished.
- Spanish Netherlands was controlled by Spain, but they rebelled against Spain as they didn’t want this. The rebels were being helped by soldiers from England.

Describe the English strategy.
- ships positioned abt 150m away and use their superior guns to fire 20kg cannonballs through the side
- smalled canons known as ‘man killers’ will fire 8 kg cannonballs at the sailors
- when the Spanish ships are packed with tired soldiers, the English will hop on and finish them off
Describe the Spanish strategy.
- Spanish galleons will steer next to the enemy ships and tie themselves with ropes and hooks to get over to the other ship.
- soldiers would hop onto the enemy’s ship and fight with sword, daggers, and muskets
- heavy guns would also touch the enemy’s ship and blow holes into the sides
Describe what actually happened during the war.
- all 130 Spanish ships set out, sailing close together in a crescent shape so that it will be difficult for the English to attack
- English navy have chased the Spaniards for a week but cannot sink a single ship
- Spanish arrived in Calais, France on 6 August to wait for Spanish soldiers to join them but it was delayed
- Sir Francis Drake attacked the Spanish ships with fireships. The Spanish ships got scared and scattered in ones or twos.
- The Spaniards flee north, which a great storm hit as they struggle home.
- Most ships were damaged. They were forced to get ashore, which were attacked by Scots and Irish.
