Chapter 1: Patient Care Flashcards
main goal of body systems
keep body in homeostasis
integumentary system consist of
skin(including sweat and oil glands), hair, and nails
Primary function of integumentary system
protection; prevents bacteria, foreign bodies, and chemicals from entering body; allow people to feel heat, pain, cold; temp regulation; prevent water loss or excessive absorption of water
skeletal system consists of
bones and joints(including cartilage and ligaments)
primary function of skeletal system
support, movement with help from muscles, bones store minerals and fat, produce blood cells
muscular system consists of
voluntary(striated) and involuntary(smooth) muscles
function of muscular system
movement, posture, produce heat
nervous system consists of
brain, spinal cord, nerves, and sensory receptors; allow us to hear, smell, taste, touch
function of nervous system
regulate bodys control system to maintain homeostasis; communicate, think, and coordinate movements
endocrine system consists of
hormone-producing glands throughout body
function of endocrine system
regulate metabolism, growth, sleep cycles, stress hormones, blood glucose levels, and reproduction
cardiovascular/circulatory system consists of
heart, blood vessels, and blood
function of cardiovascular/circulatory system
transport oxygen, nutrients, hormones, water, and waste products throughout body; temp regulation and immune-system response
lymphatic system consists of
lymph nodes, lymphatic vessels, spleen, tonsils, and thymus
lymphatic primary function
protect body by filtering blood and lymph, removing toxins; transport system
