Chapter 1: Origin Of Elements Flashcards
What is organic chemistry?
Defined as the chemistry of hydrocarbons and their derivatives.
Define inorganic chemistry
Chemistry that deals with everything other than hydrocarbon and their derivatives.
Comparison between organic and inorganic chemistry
- Have single, double and triple bonds.
Tetratomic
Tetrahedral shape with no central atom.
What era has become obsolete in chem?
Era of sharp diving lines between subfields in chemistry.
What are similarities and differences in organic and inorganic chem based on?
- Structure
- Bonding
- Reactivity
Define isotopes
A form of a chemical element in which atoms have the same proton number but different number of neutrons.
Isotopes of Carbon
C12 found abundantly (6p & 6n) and C13 1% found. C14 is not stable and decay over time.
Where did elements come from?
Started with the big bang which created the initial “quantum soup” of nuclear particles.
What elements were formed first, when and why?
Hydrogen and Helium
- Few mins after big bang
- They are some of the lightest nuclides.
When were the heavier elements fromed?
Several years later (10^6) as it needs a high pressure and temperature.
How much of the universe does hydrogen make up?
93%
Where were the heavier metals formed?
In the stars as it had the high concentration and temperature.
Define nuclear fusion
Process where 2 light atomic nuclei combine to form a single heavier one while releasing massive amounts of energy.
