Chapter 1 - Nerve & Muscle Flashcards
Tight Junctions
permeability barrier, prevent transport of proteins from lumenal side to basolateral side of the cell
Desmosomes
hold together epithelial cells
Gap Junctions
allow water-soluble molecules to pass from cytoplasm of one cell to cytoplasm of another cell—allows equilibration within connected epithelial cells
Basal Lamina
type of desmosomes, joins epithelial cell to basal side of cell
Fibroblasts
secrete collagen, reticulin, and elastin, which are structural proteins
Reticulin
thin fiber found in spleen and lymph nodes
Elastin
highly cross-linked protein found associated with organs requiring some elasticity (lungs, skin, blood vessels)
Collagen
triple-stranded, insoluble, fibrous protein, highly cross-linked
What do histamines do?
increase blood flow to the blood vessels of the affected region
