Chapter 1 - Natural Numbers Flashcards
Explain the term ‘prime numbers’.
A prime number is any number that divides by itself and one ONLY. The first five prime numbers are: 2,3,5,7,11.
Explain what the properties of natural numbers are.
Commutative: We can change the order in which 2 numbers are added or multiplied without changing the answer.
Associative: we can change the order in which 3 or more numbers are grouped when adding or multiplying without changing result.
What is meant by ‘highest common factor’?
The ‘highest common factor’ of a number, is the largest number that divides into 2 or more numbers.
e. g Find the HCF of 39, 52,78 = 13
39: 1,3,(13),39.
52: 1,2,4,(13),26,52.
78: 1,2,3,6,(13),26,39,78.
What is meant by ‘lowest common multiple’
The ‘lowest common multiple’ of a number is the smallest number into each number divides.
e. g. 3,5,10
3: 3,6,9,12,15,18,21,24,27,(30).
5: 5,10,15,20,25,(30),35,40.
10: 10,20,(30),40,50,60.
